Gustav Bumcke” International Music Competition

The international music competition for saxophone “Gustav Bumcke” was first held in Berlin in 1995

1902 lernte der Saxophonpionier Gustav Bumcke (1876-1963) met Adolphe Sax Junior on a trip to Paris. Bumcke brought eight saxophones of all sizes with him to Berlin and since then made them the focus of his composition work and set up a saxophone class. He taught at the Stern and Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatories in Berlin, both as a saxophone teacher and as a teacher of music theory and composition. Here he founded the first German saxophone quartet, in which he sometimes played the baritone saxophone as well as the bass saxophone. His daughter Heidi, who had been successful since the 1930s under her stage name Ingrid Larssen, and Gustav Bumcke's most talented pupil Emil Manz played the alto saxophone and Carl Petzelt the tenor saxophone. Around 1930, he had built up a saxophone orchestra with his students. Emil Manz repeatedly performed both Bumcke's sonata and his concerto with orchestra. Günther Raphael, among others, composed a concerto and a duo with cello for him. Unfortunately, Emil Manz died in a traffic accident in the mid-1950s.
